What Does Vocal Mixing Actually Involve?

Mixing a vocal is the most detailed and time-consuming part of music production for most engineers. A raw vocal recording — even from a great singer in a good room — needs significant processing before it sounds polished and sits correctly in a track. The standard vocal chain includes:

High-pass filtering — removing low-frequency rumble and handling noise below 80-100Hz that the voice doesn't need and that just clutters the mix.

EQ — corrective cuts to remove boxy frequencies (around 300-400Hz), nasal buildup (around 1-2kHz), and harsh sibilance (around 5-8kHz). Additive boosts for presence (around 3-5kHz) and air (above 12kHz).

Compression — controlling the dynamic range of the vocal so it sits at a consistent level in the mix. Aggressive compression for pop and hip-hop. Lighter compression for folk and singer-songwriter styles.

De-essing — specifically targeting harsh "s" and "t" sounds that get exaggerated by compression and microphone proximity.

Noise reduction — cleaning up room noise, breaths, and background hiss.

Engineer Guy handles all of these automatically, analyzing your specific recording and applying the appropriate processing — not a generic preset.

Getting a Better Raw Recording

No amount of processing fixes a fundamentally bad recording. For best results before you upload: record in the quietest space available, position the mic 6–8 inches from your mouth (not right up on it), and use a pop filter to eliminate plosives. Record at a consistent level — peaks around -12 to -6 dBFS leaves room for processing without clipping.

If you're recording on a phone or a USB mic, the AI can still significantly improve the result — but a basic condenser mic in a carpeted room will always give you a better starting point than a phone mic in a tiled bathroom.

How Vocals Should Sit in a Mix

The vocal is almost always the most important element in a track with a singer. It needs to be audible and clear at all times — not buried in the mix, not blasting over everything else. A properly processed vocal has controlled dynamics (so it doesn't disappear during quiet phrases or overload during loud ones), a clean frequency response (no buildup or harshness), and enough presence to cut through the instrumentation without sounding harsh or fatiguing.

The AI targets exactly this — a vocal that sits in the pocket of a mix and sounds intentional and professional rather than raw and unprocessed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I upload a raw vocal recorded on my phone?

Yes. The AI will apply noise reduction in addition to the standard vocal chain. Results are better with a dedicated mic, but phone recordings are significantly improvable.

Does this add reverb and effects?

The AI applies light processing for clarity and presence. Heavy reverb and creative effects are mix decisions that should be made in context with the full track — those aren't applied automatically.

What formats can I upload?

MP3, WAV, and FLAC. For best processing results, upload a 24-bit WAV at 44.1kHz or 48kHz.

Can I use this on a full mix or just isolated vocals?

Both work. If you upload an isolated vocal track, the processing is most effective. If you upload a full mix, the AI applies overall mix processing — use the mastering tools for that instead.

Is it free?

Your first session is completely free with full-quality output and no watermarks. Pro plan ($9/month) for unlimited processing.
