Mix Analysis on Stems

After separating, run the AI mixer on individual stems to understand how the original was engineered.

What Is Stem Separation?

Stem separation (also called source separation) is the process of splitting a mixed audio file into its individual component tracks — vocals, drums, bass, and instruments. What used to require access to the original multitrack session can now be done from any stereo file using AI-powered separation models.

What You Can Do with Separated Stems

The use cases are massive for producers and engineers. Create acapellas for remixes or mashups. Sample a drum break or bass line. Remove the vocal from a reference track to hear the mix underneath. Practice mixing by re-mixing a professional song from isolated stems. Check how a vocal was recorded and processed by hearing it clean. Export stems for submission to remix contests.

How Engineer Guy's Stem Separation Works

Upload your audio file and select "Stem Separation" as your task. The AI model processes the stereo file and outputs four tracks: vocals, drums, bass, and other (which captures instruments like guitar, piano, synths). Each stem is returned as a separate downloadable WAV file matched to the original length and sample rate.

Quality depends on the complexity of the source material. Stems from well-produced, commercially mixed tracks tend to separate cleanly. Dense, heavily layered productions may have some bleed between stems — this is a fundamental limitation of the technology, not specific to any one tool.

Stem Separation vs. Full Mix Analysis

Stem separation is a Studio plan feature in Engineer Guy. If you're on the free or Pro plan, you still get full AI mix analysis on any track — which gives you frequency-level breakdowns of what each instrument is doing in the mix, without needing to separate them. Both approaches help you understand how a mix was built — separation just gives you the actual isolated files.

Frequently Asked Questions

How good is the vocal isolation quality?

For most modern, well-mixed tracks, vocal isolation is clean enough for remix and sample use. Some bleed from the instrumental may be present in very dense mixes. The AI uses state-of-the-art source separation models.

Can I separate stems from any song?

You can upload any audio file you have rights to. The separation works on any genre and any era of music, though more recent, digitally produced tracks tend to separate more cleanly than older recordings.

What stems does Engineer Guy separate?

Four stems: vocals, drums, bass, and other instruments. The 'other' stem captures everything that doesn't fit the first three categories — guitar, piano, synths, strings, etc.

Is stem separation free?

Stem separation is available on the Studio plan ($19/month). Free and Pro plans get full AI mix analysis. Upgrade to Studio to unlock stem separation.

How long does separation take?

A typical 3–5 minute track takes 1–3 minutes to separate, depending on server load. You'll get notified when the stems are ready to download.
